Networking: An Honest And Genuine Connection By Jared Quan, Book Review

Networking: An Honest and Genuine Connection by Jared Quan is the written compilation of the years of Jared's journey of learning how to make connections with other people. Check out the credentials from his author biography below to see how many groups he is involved in, and I know from working with him on a few of these that there are more that aren't listed.

I was given a copy of Networking from Jared for review purposes. I also was able to have a chat with Jared Quan about some of what he does and how he got to where he is at. It is available on my YouTube channel (link to video).

The Book

You may consider this a self-help book. In many ways it is. What Jared makes clear though is if you approach networking with others purely on the premise of what they can do for you, it isn't going to work well. This sets the premise of his book of being a learn how to be present in the moment and help other people.

Along with teaching how to be a good and honest networker, Jared shares his journey over roughly the last decade plus years. His path to being involved on so many boards and being able to participate in so many opportunities began with him deciding on a goal. After he understood where he wanted to go, who he wanted to be, and how he wanted to impact others, he started looking for opportunities to embrace that ideal.

He expresses it wasn't an easy journey. We each have our own obstacles, and he was starting out as a major introvert. He found ways of overcoming his obstacles and shares what he did (I've seen what he does in action). As he began teaching at conferences about what he was learning, he learned just as much from his audiences as he was teaching. He has worked with and mentored people on how they can be successful by understanding their weaknesses and helping them to work beyond them.

Anyone who has tried and struggled, Networking is an inspirational book. Jared not only shares his accomplishments. The book also talks about some of his failures, and the lessons he learned from them. Failure is a part of progress as long as we don't let it stop us.

Years ago, I taught goal setting courses on a more professional level, and I recognized many of the principles I learned those years ago from what is shared in Networking. This is important to me. I have ready books that included elements of goal setting that didn't get down to the level of how to create the tasks and habits required to reach the chosen goal. Jared provides those steps for those who want to learn how to be a person who can network with the people they meet on a professional and personal level.

Networking: An Honest and Genuine Connection is an easy 100-page read. You can easily read this book in a single setting. If you do that, and you're serious about wanting to learn how to network, then you should flip right back to the front and read it again. This shorter presentation of the information, and the focus of the topic, make this a great book to go back through again and again, writing notes, and exploring what you are doing and what works for you.

I recommend Networking: An Honest and Genuine Connection for any person who wants to learn the art of networking and creating a network that will last.
